Relationship Between Health Anxiety and the Motivations of the Health Programs Monitoring by Hospitalized Patients

Objective: It is stated that individuals with high health anxiety mostly prefer to receive information from sources such as internet and television instead of getting help from health personnel. The information sources can seriously impare functionality by further increasing patient\'s anxiety. In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between health anxiety and motivations of health programs monitoring by hospitalized patients in medical and surgical clinics in a hospital.

Material and Method: The study included 199 patients who were hospitalized at medical and surgical clinics. Demographic Information Form, Health Anxiety Scale (HAS) and Health Program Viewing Motivation Scale (HPVMS) were used to collect data. In evaluating the data; descriptive statistics were used as well as Pearson Correlation Analysis, Mann Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis Test.

Results: It was determined that being female, having a chronic disease, using drugs, viewing health programs and perception of having poor socioe-conomic level increase a mean total score of the HAS of patients at statistical significance (p <0,05). In addition, a strong correlation was found between the HPVMS scores of patients and dimension of hypersensitivity of physical symptoms and anxiety, while a moderate relation was found between the HPVMS scores and dimension of negative results of disease (r =0,951, p <0,001; r =0,621, p <0,001, respectively).

Conclusion: This study showed that there is a relationship between the HAS scores and the HPVMS scores in hospitalized patients in internal and surgical clinics. It has been proposed to determine the level of health anxiety of patients in medical and surgical clinics.
