Objective: The use of esmolol has been shown to reduce the need for intraoperative anesthetic and analgesic use in the intraoperative period and to require less analgesic medication in the postoperative period. Therefore, it has been recommended to be used.

Material and Method: Sixty-five patients undergoing head and neck surgery with controlled hypotension were divided into two groups, patients used intraoperative remifentanyl and esmolol. The amount of anesthetic used in the intraoperative period and the need for neuromuscular blockers were compared in both groups. Analgesic and antiemetic use were evaluated at 30th minute, third and sixth hours postoperatively.

Results: Analgesic requirement was found to be significantly lower in patients who used esmolol (n =30) at the postoperative third and sixth hours. However, intraoperative sevoflurane and neuromuscular blocker use was found to be significantly higher in the esmolol group. The comparison in terms of postoperative antiemetic use revealed that there was no significant difference between the groups.

Conclusion: The postoperative analgesic requirement has been found to be less in patients using esmolol, however, the need for intraoperative anest-hetic and neuromuscular blocking agent use was higher.
