Knowledge and Attitudes About Herbal Products and Herbal Medicine in People Applying to Family Health Care Center

Objective: The purpose of this study; to examine the knowledge and approach of people for in herbal products and herbal medicine in the community and to make comparisons between sociodemographic characteristics and this knowledge.

Material and Method: This cross-sectional study was carried out by applying a questionnaire with a face-to-face interview technique to 348 people who applied to family health centers for any reason between 01 July and 31 December 2018. The questionnaire included sociodemographic information and behaviors related to herbal product-medicine. Descriptive analysis and chi square test were used for data evaluation.

Results: The average age of the participants is 39.72 ± 12.87 years, 71.6% are women and 35.3% are at the education level of university graduates and above. 47.1% of the participants were interested in herbal medicine and applied herbal medicine, 9.8% stated that they used alternative-complementary-herbal medicine first when they got sick. It was found that women prefer to use more herbal products than men. The most important source of information about the herbal products of the participants is the internet usage with 39.4%. Participants obtain herbal products mostly from herbalists (76%).

Conclusion: Due to the harm and side effects of herbal products, their controlled use is of great importance. Countries have great responsibilities regarding licensing, effectiveness and safety control for herbal preparations.
