Objective: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the results of patients who were followed up and treated in our clinic due to corrosive substance ingestion retrospectively and evaluated in the light of the literature.

Material and Method: Patients who were followed up and treated for corrosive substance ingestion between years 2000 and 2012 in our clinic were evaluated in terms of age, sex, symptoms and findings, the substance consumed, the location of the lesion, diagnosis and treatment methods, morbidity and mortality.

Results: In our study, 270 patients who were followed up and treated for corrosive substance ingestion were evaluated retrospectively. Hundred and fifty-six of the patients were male (57.8%) and 114 of them were female (42.2%). The patients were mostly seen in the 0-3 group (40.7%) and secondarily (32.2%) in the 3-6 age group. The most commonly consumed corrosive substances were lime remover (28.9%), hydrochloric acid (25.6%) and degreaser (19.2%). The most common examination findings of our patients were edema in the lips, mouth, oropharynx (66.6%), vomiting (24.8%) and dysphagia (20.3%).

Conclusion: Corrosive esophageal and gastric burns continue to be an important health problem in children, especially in the first 6 years of age. Considering the result of esophageal and gastric involvement, it appears to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is very important to use corrosive materials consciously both for producers and consumers.
