Objective: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer after lung cancer and is about 26% of all cancers in women. Mortality rate is 18%. Imaging methods, aspiration cytologies and core biopsies are useful before radical surgeries are performed. Breast carcinomas have different histopathologic features. The reason for these different histopathologic features are the increased number of investigations on the genetic characteristics of the tumor, and research the gene expression patterns in tumors. The melanoma-associated antigen (MAGE) family consists of a number of antigens recognized by cytotoxic T lymphocytes. MAGE–A11 is expressed in tumors such as melanoma, breast and lung cancer. In this study we investigated MAGE–A11 expression in invasive carcinoma of no special type, invasive lobular carcinomas and benign breast tissues.

Material and Method: A total of 150 cases as 50 benıgn breast tissue, 50 invasive carcinoma of no special type and 50 invasive lobular carcinoma were randomisely selected from Fırat University Medical Faculty Pathology Department. MAGE–A11 was applied to the samples immunohistochemically.

Results: MAGE–A11 expression was observed at 33 of 50 benign breast tissues (66%), 45 of 50 invasive carcinoma of no special type ( 90%) and 35 of 50 invasive lobular (70%) carcinomas.

Conclusion: MAGE–A11 cannot help in distinguishing between benign and malign breast tissues. However, it was concluded that high expression of MAGE–A11 in the no special type of invasive carcinoma can be useful in differential diagnosis with invasive lobular carcinomas.
