Determining the Change of Body Composition Over a Year Period Among Medical Students

Objectives: To determine body composition of young medical student over a year period and evaluating in for obesity development.

Materials and Methods: Body composition of medical student 1-3 years medical students were measured using foot-to-foot bioelectrical impedance analysis (BİA). Paired t-test was used to analyse data and P<0.05 accepted as a significant.

Results: The mean (±SE) body weight change was 2.95 kg (4.37%, P=0.0001) in males (n=122) and 0.88 kg (%1.58, P=0.01) in females (n=55). Incerase in body fat mass was 1.83 kg (27.3%, P=0.0001) in males and 0.7 kg (%5.69, P=0.01) in females.

Conclusion: Despite the differences among the individuals, either body weight or body fat mass increased in both males and females. Body composition measurements is an important point to consider the subjects who has high incerases in body weight in regard to obesity. ©2005, Fırat Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi
