The Effects of Trainning About Smoking at Adolescence Period

Objective: This study has been planned and executed for the purpose of eliciting effects of the education given to children relating to cigarettes in adolescent age.

Materials and Methods: Two high schools and two primary schools were classified into experiment and control groups. Totally 984 students in these schools were included in the research. Five different types of education were given to the students in experiment group during one academic year. A questionnaire was applied to students for three times. Chi-square was used in comparison of groups and chi-square and student t-test were used in Mc Nemar dependent groups and variance analysis was used in repeating measurements.

Results and Conclusion: Knowledge point of students of primary school experiment group increased to 12.7 from 8.6±0.2, and that of high school group increased to 13.5±0.1 from 10.9± 0.1 (p< 0.000). Knowledge point of students of primary school control group increased to 8.9±0.1 from 8.7±0.1, and that of high school group increased to 10.0±0.2 from 9.9±0.2 and there is not a meaningful increase (p> 0.05). While there is no difference between experiment and control schools in terms of quitting smoking incidences (relative efficacy 1.0), a difference between experiment and control high schools in terms of incidence of beginning to smoke was determined (%3.9 / %4.3 relative efficacy 1.10). Results showed that the education given had a positive effect in terms of increasing knowledge however it was not very effective in changing behavior. Key words: Smoking, adolescents, education
