Objective: Our objective was to compare Griggs, Ciaglia and PercuTwist techniques, which are percutaneous tracheostomy (PT) methods, duration of the procedure, difficulty during application and early complications.

Materials and Methods: After the Faculty Ethics Committee approval was obtained, 60 patients who will receive PT were included in the study. PT was applied respectively in Group G, Group P and Group C by Griggs, PerkuTwist and Ciaglia methods. Demographic data, duration of stay in ICU, value of Hb before process and after 24 hours of process and SpO2 values of the patients were recorded. The duration of the intervention, amount of bleeding during and after the intervention, difficulty of dilation and tracheostomy cannula, the amount of blood aspired from the lungs were recorded.

Results: No significant difference was found between the demographic data and hemoglobin values of the patients. Dilation cannot be created in 3 patients in Group P. The duration of intervention was shortest in Group G. Implantation of dilation and tracheostomy cannula was easiest in Group G. The least amount of bleeding during the procedure occurred in Group G and P, and highest amount in Group C. The amount of blood aspired from the lungs were found least in Group P. Desaturation was observed least in Group G (p<0.05).

Conclusion: In ICU, all PT methods can be safely applied in the company of bronchoscopy. However, easier dilation and tracheostomy cannula implantation and shorter intervention period provide advantage to Griggs method, less amount of bleeding during the procedure to Ciaglia method and less amount of blood aspired from the lungs to PercuTwist method.
