Objective: We aimed to evaluate serum levels of adiponectin in the different groups of patients with ischemic stroke and healthy control subjects.

Material and Methods: 50 patients with acute ischemic stroke and 30 healthy controls were included in this study. Serum levels of adiponectin were compared with respect to the diabetics and nondiabetics and also were compared according to TOAST (Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment) criteria in the patients with stroke.

Results: Serum adiponectin levels were not significantly different between the stroke patients and healthy groups and also between the stroke subgroups (p>0.05). There was no significant difference between diabetic and non-diabetic stroke patients (p>0.05).

Conclusion: These results suggest that serum adiponectin levels in the patients with acute ischemic stroke do not show a statistically significant difference when compared to healthy controls. We conclude from our data that serum adiponectin levels have no important effect on the ischemic stroke.
