The Frequency of Signs of Depression and Affecting Factors in the Students of a Health High School

Objective: This study is realized among the students of Health High School of Kilis 7 Aralık University to determine the frequency of signs of depression and affecting factors.

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study is done among 230 students of Yusuf Şerefoğlu Health High School of Kilis 7 Aralık University on May 2010. All students were involved in the study and a survey was made under direct observation including sociodemographic features, possible factors affecting depression and a questionnare of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). T test and unidirectional variant analysis are used for statistical analysis and p<0.05 is accepted as statistically significant.

Results: Students included in the study consisted of 77.4% female and 22.6% male students with an avarage age of 20.74±1.79. Avarage BDI score of students was 10.46±8.87'dir (min:0, max:49). According to BDI cutting off point, ratio of students who have total points higher than 17 is 18.3%. Avarage BDI score was lower in students who chose the school willingly, who do not have any shelter problems and have a mother and a father, whose mother is educated in high school or university, and who expressed their health condition as good or normal, who has regular food supply compared to opposite groups (p<0.05).

Conclusion: In this study in one out of five students of the university of health signs of depression are present. Therefore aproppriate approach related to this subject should be provided for the students who will work in the area of health later and results of affecting factors should be evaluated with warning measures.
