Study of Patients with Blunt Trauma in Emergency Department

Objective: This study aims to describe the characteristics of blunt trauma patients admitted to Emergency Medicine.

Materials and Methods: During a year the trauma cases admitted to emergency department of Firat University were analyzed prospectively. Patients' age, gender, occurrence time of the trauma, vital signs, site of injury, type of injury, injury severity score, Glasgow Coma Scale, during his stay in the emergency department, the patient lies, clinic, hospital stay, and the results were recorded.

Results: 2407 blunt trauma patients admitted to the emergency department were included. 1609 of cases (66.9%) were male and 798 of cases (33.1%) were female. The mean age was 25.53±21,60. While 0-16 age group was found to be most exposed to blunt trauma (43.2%), the number of male gender in all age groups were significantly higher than in women. According to the shape of hospitalization of other patients brought by ambulance, died in the emergency room and died in the other service rate was found to be statistically significantly better. The summer months (37.5%), and time interval from 13:00 to 16:59 (31.5%) were the most common exposure time. Head and brain regions were the most commonly injured body regions (39.2%).

Conclusion: This study is important in terms of its contributions to Turkey's epidemiological blunt trauma data, and so, we are of the opinion that more studies are needed to be done in this area.
