The Relationship Between the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors of Elderly Individuals and the Perceived Social Support

Objective: Social support may play an important role in gaining and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors of elderly individuals. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the healthy lifestyle behaviors of elderly individuals and the perceived social support.

Material and Method: A total of 93 elderly individuals who had been coming to the Emek 75. Yıl Elderly Solidarity Center were included in this descriptive study. A questionnaire including the descriptive characteristics of the elderly individuals, the healthy lifestyle behaviors scale (HLBS), and the multi-dimensional perceived social support scale(MPSSS) of were used to gather data.

Results: We found a significant relationship between mean score of special person subgroup of MPSSS and mean score of coping with stress subg-roup of HLBS (r=0.207, p<0.05). The social support subgroups (family, friends, special person) mean scores of living only with their spouse or with their spouse and children and special person subgroup mean scores those who were married were higher (p<0.05). The self-realization, health responsible, interpersonal support, nutrition subgroups mean scores of primary school graduate elderly individuals were significantly higher mean scores of other groups (p<0.05). The mean scores of those without chronic disease regarding receiving support from a special person were found to be signifi-cantly higher than those with a chronic disease (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The results of the study show the necessity of initiatives regarding the evaluation and increase of social support resources and elderly individuals' health preservation- and improvement-related behaviors.
