Objective: The aim of our study is to compare the serum electrolyte and magnesium levels of patients with simple febrile convulsion and febrile status epilepticus.

Material and Method: This study included 115 patients, who presented with simple febrile convulsion and febrile status epilepticus between January 2020 and December 2020. Epidemiological data and laboratory values of the patients were obtained from hospital records. Patients with an underlying neurological disease and a diagnosis of epilepsy were not included in the evaluation.

Results: The files of 115 patients, including 73 simple febrile convulsions and 42 febrile status, were retrospectively reviewed. The mean age of the patients who had both febrile convulsions and febrile status epilepticus was found to be 2.54±1.73 years. No significant difference was found between serum electrolyte levels in both patient groups. Although serum magnesium and sodium levels were low in the febrile status epilepticus group, this decrease was not statistically significant (p =0.054).

Conclusion: There is no significant difference between serum electrolyte levels of patients with simple febrile convulsions and febrile status. Serum sodium and magnesium levels were lower in the febrile status epilepticus group, but the difference was not statistically significant. There is a need for prospective and comprehensive studies to evaluate magnesium levels more accurate in patients with febrile convulsions and febrile status epilepticus.
